History of MHS

As a former teacher at Maysville Jr./Sr. High, I had the privilege of being the last year book sponsor. Believe me, it was a labor of love for all those involved and I am quite sure there were tears shed as the final copy was sent to the publisher. Before I get too melancholy, let me address some of the questions you asked. Maysville City School System was in existence for 115 years. According to a letter written on March 14, 1914, by A. January Grundy to Professor W.J. Caplinger, the first high school in Maysville was established November 1864 in "Neptune (Fire) Hall" which was located at the corner of Fourth and Market Street. It actually began operation in 1865 and Grundy was the first principal. In 1879, the fire hall building was torn down and a four-room brick building was constructed on the same site and this became the first building actually built specifically for a high school. In 1908, education had taken top priority in Maysville and three new schools were ordered built with the high school given top priority. On May 14, 1908, the basement of the new school was complete. It stands were the very first building every constructed in Maysville (formerly Limestone) was built. Simon Kenton directed three of his friends to build a blockhouse where the school now stands.Much of this information comes from an article published in the May 27, 1991, Commemorative Edition of the Ledger-Independent and the dedication of Mary Margaret Meadows and other staff writers to preserve the history of the Maysville School System. 9. 9. Earle D. Jones- 1955-1972
10. 10. Robert L. Biddle- 1972 to 1990

Mr. Biddle is the only one of the superintendents who graduated from MHS, served in the capacity of teacher, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent.Earle Jones first came to Maysville in 1932 and coached until 1955. He won 537 games, 19 district titles (14 in a row) and coached the winners of the state title in 1947. He also coached runner-up teams in 1938 and 1948. What Adolph Rupp was to UK basketball, Earle Jone was to MHS basketball.
