Reunion Report From Evolyn Mains Allen

Ed and I got to Maysville Thursday night because we had had stuff to do in Frankfort and Lexington on Thursday.  Some others got there Friday.  Lois goes to Maysville frequently and has dinner with Johnny & Helen Anne, Millie & Nick Pitakis, Anne Morton & Allen, and Bob & Beverly Biddle; so she organized dinner for that group Friday night at Moyer’s and let Ed and me and Wendell & Pam go along.  Baby sister Marsha was with Lois, too. It was a perfect night, and we had great time and made too much noise, probably.   After dinner we went to the Hampton Inn, where they and the McChords were staying and just visited in the lobby.  Dickie joined us (Judy thought going to a granddaughter’s event would be more fun) as did Gene Bates and his wife.  We stayed at the French Quarter because I’m a “downtown girl” and don’t like to betray downtown by staying up on top of the hill!!

The weather was great all weekend for wandering around town.  Saturday’s dinner at Caproni’s was really nice.  Food was certainly above average for a group buffet like that.  Best roasted chicken I’ve had in a restaurant and a broccoli casserole that I made Ed go get more of for me.  We had a great time just visiting.  Tom Prather did a nice tribute to the 20 of our class that we’ve lost.  When you subtract those, we had half of those of us who are left, which is the envy of lots of other classes.  Most don’t do nearly that well attendance-wise, especially for an off-year event.  I’m assuming every one of you will show up in 2017.  And we’ll look a LOT younger than the people in a picture I have of the May’s Lick H.S. 60th reunion in 1990!!

I don’t have a list of those of us who were there, so I’ll probably leave out somebody.  I’ll send  all of you a group picture.  Bobby and Marcella Jones came from Cincinnati; Mefford was there.  His mother fell and broke her hip in December but has recovered nicely – is at the new, very nice assisted living center, Kenton Pointe, but says she’s going home. I was sorry she hadn’t come back from church and dinner yet when I went by there to see her on our way out of town.  Ronnie’s wife’s health has been worse than his mom’s, so he went right back to Louisville after dinner.  Johnny Carter’s wife didn’t come with him, either, because they have a deal – he doesn’t have to go to her reunions and she doesn’t have to go to his; so he left early as well.  (Noel didn’t leave early – she forgot which weekend it was and didn’t come!)  Larry Herkamp came from Louisville, Vernon Huber & Donnie Merrill both came from the Cincinnati area, and the Lukins twins came from Paris.  The rest who were there live either in town or fairly close: Frances Kirk, Millie, Frankie Rigdon, Margie Lennex, Bonnie Heidelberg, Marty Hawkins, Gary Truesdell, Tom Prather, Billy Osborne, Nooky Rosser,  Anne Morton, Kenny Roberson.  I forgot to count how many we had for breakfast at Frisch’s Sunday morning, but it was a good group.

Have you all heard about the little bonus treat at dinner?  The Clooney family reunion was in the room next to ours, and George was there.  If you ever wanted to see a bunch of 75-year-olds making absolute idiots of themselves, you could have that night – getting their faces and their cameras right up against the glass of the doors separating the two rooms.  It was pretty embarrassing, but the people on the other side of the glass acted like they didn’t see a thing.  I guess at our age, we can act like fools if we darn well please!!

We missed ALL of you and will be really glad to see you next time!
Evolyn

P.S.  I had an e-mail from Easter Goodwin a couple of weeks before the reunion.  Her by-pass surgery went well, and she was recovering nicely.
